The Looking Glass in the Dark

We want to know how we are doing. We look at
ourselves to see how we are doing. We look
at our reflection and begin to measure.

We want to measure and find out which side of
the ledger we fall on. We use our conditions to
compare.

We mark where we think we started and want to
know the distance we have come and how far
there is left to go.

We don't know. We can't know.
It's humbling to look and see the shattered cup.
It tells us what we need to know.

It's empty. This cup, is empty.
It has shape and form. It held water, milk or tea.
It's been cleaned and dried. Touched by many hands.
Without a blow, it fell apart.

Part stands upright and part, lay fallen,
open on a side.
We see it.
It's enough.
Each part shapes the other.

We see their history right before us.
Transparent.
Nothing left to measure.
We realize everything reveals.
We just look again and again.

What changes?
The cup. Time. The looking mind.
