Protection in the Dark

We are often squeezed and shoved by our untrained
mind. Fears masquerade as warnings that lead us astray.
They parade endlessly through well-worn territory.

We need protection, often fierce protection. We can burn
our tongue making a hot cup of coffee. We stray from
the cup and gulp down a mouthful of what others have
done to us or maybe what they say.

We want immunity from all the drips of poison.
Each one leaves a bitter taste. We find it nearly
impossible to forgive even the smallest drip.
They leave a canker, it's the sore place we keep rubbing.

We growl and frown at what threatens. Worn, we
lose our balance. A slow, stumble towards the coffee pot
preserves us in safekeeping. It's our ability to fight off these
throbbing fear ridden memories. We replace the cap on the
milk carton. We hold ourselves against the waxed container.
The fridge becomes our stronghold. We put the milk away.
We purify the mind. Clean the counter. We rest in a sigh. Sit down.
Yes, we sit down. We clear the air. Smell the coffee. We take
our medicine. Use a spoon. We begin to recover. Sipping,
we begin to recall where we are.Without scolding ourselves,
we pay attention to the rim of the cup and are free to take
another sip.

The safeguard which inoculates is right in front of our left eye.
